Car companies have been developing autonomous vehicle technology for years, and Ford is inching closer to unveiling its newest model at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and the North American International Auto Show.

According to Chris Brewer, Chief Program Engineer for Ford Autonomous Vehicle Development, Ford is creating two perception mechanisms that will help power the Fusion Hybrid’s virtual driver system.

Meet the Meditated and Direct Perception Systems

Meditated perception generates a high-resolution 3D map of the car’s nearby environment. It’s a neat process that even includes things like stop signs and crosswalks. Direct perception supplements mediated perception by using sensors to determine the car’s location on the road, while it monitors more dynamic objects such as pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles.
